Tom’s Vision

This is the legacy of Tom Vaughan, a dear friend, colleague, partner, and son, who inspired us all to know ourselves a little better. Tom tragically died aged 34 in Los Angeles, at the peak of his career, accidentally drowning in circumstances triggered by a severe anxiety attack.

In the weeks and months preceding this, he had talked to many of us about his ambition to help mankind by creating a company called Know Thyself. It would teach self-understanding to help people prepare for and overcome the anxiety they’d face in their careers and lives ahead. Tom believed this way of thinking should start in our early years - in schools, colleges and universities, as well as continuing into the workplace.

Through the Know Thyself Charitable Trust, we will perpetuate Tom’s legacy of love, kindness, wellbeing and sense of community. This will be a celebration of his life, a tribute to his humanity and a fitting memorial for his vision.

Our Purpose

Our purpose is to help and support people at a time when they are developing their careers - people who are experiencing and suffering from mental health problems such as stress and anxiety.

We believe that deep self-understanding is the foundation of good mental health, and that to know thyself is the key to fulfilling your full potential - in your work, your relationships, and in every aspect of your life. Above all, by knowing ourselves, we are better equipped to handle the stresses of a career ahead, or to deal with stresses and anxieties already in our minds.

These are conditions that often, though not exclusively, emanate from within the workplace. So we fundraise for charities and organisations that support mental health in the workplace - those which are making a real difference in a world that all-too-often rushes to help only when it’s too late.

What we are doing?

One of the tasks of Know Thyself is to select charities that most closely align with our objectives to support mental health in the workplace. At the moment our mental health team will be participating in the courses of Solent Mind with the view of Fundraising for them. Solent Mind’s mission is to make sure anyone in their community experiencing a mental health issue has somewhere to turn to for advice. Supporting the training of Mental Health First aiders would be one of our targets

Another one of our Objectives is to raise awareness in schools and the workplace. We will also be seeking to partner with Mind Apples Charity which encourages and supports everyone to take better care of their minds Thinking in terms of Mindapples rather than Mental health, which puts a different slant on the stigmatised word mental. Learning about your 5 a day for a happy healthy mind . Our focus is to look after our minds, like we look after our bodies. The Mindapples vision with its straightforward and positive message would be an excellent vehicle for raising awareness in schools.
